Friends Photoshoot in Paris

A friends photoshoot in Paris takes one to two hours and works with any group size. It is the easiest session to shoot because the energy is already there: we mostly walk, keep you talking, and photograph what happens between the poses.

Group photos usually fail for the same reason: everyone is asked to stand still and look at the lens at once. We do the opposite. We give the group something to do, we shoot wide while it happens, and we take the posed frame at the end, once nobody is nervous any more.

Montmartre steps

Levels, so a group does not flatten into a line. Go early – by mid-morning the staircases are busy.

Le Recrutement, our café stop

Zinc bar, big windows, a terrace. The most natural backdrop for a group that is already talking over each other.

The Seine quays

Down at water level: stone, reflections and no traffic. Room for a large group without anyone falling out of frame.

Galeries Lafayette rooftop

Rooftops over the Opéra. Free, spectacular, and best in the last hour before it closes.

Photographer tip

Decide the outfits in the group chat before the trip, not in the hotel room on the morning. One palette, no matching, and one person who is allowed to have the final say.

How a group session works

Four rules that save a friends shoot.

We shoot wide first

The whole group, walking, before anyone gets self-conscious. That frame is usually the one that ends up printed.

Then we break it up

Pairs, threes, the two who never see each other. Small groups produce the photos people actually send to each other.

Props are allowed

Balloons, a bouquet, a sash, a picnic setup. Tell us in advance and we plan a route where carrying them is not a problem.

The posed one comes last

Everyone can hold a good pose for thirty seconds. Nobody can hold it for an hour, so we save it for the end.

What to wear for a friends photoshoot

One palette, no uniform. Pick two or three colours the whole group works inside and let everyone choose their own shape within it. Matching outfits photograph as a costume; a shared palette photographs as a group.

If it is a bachelorette, let the bride be the one in white or the brightest colour and keep everyone else quieter. It reads instantly in every frame and saves you from explaining who is who.
